Abstract:
This study investigated the impact of sustainable supplier development on firm performance at the
Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua. The research explored the relationship between sustainable
supplier development and performance, assessed the challenges associated with implementing
sustainable supplier development, and identified strategies to enhance firm performance through
these initiatives. The study focused on a target population of 32 staff from the Main Store,
Procurement Department, and Pharmacy Store, with questionnaires distributed across these
departments. The findings revealed that most respondents believe sustainable supplier
development can positively influence the hospital's performance by providing training to suppliers,
assessing them to improve operational efficiency, and enhancing healthcare services. However,
the study also identified challenges, such as supplier reluctance to adopt sustainable practices, lack
of top management support due to limited funding, and insufficient awareness among suppliers
about the importance of sustainability initiatives. To address these challenges, strategies such as
effective supplier collaboration, training and education on sustainable practices, consideration of
social responsibility, assistance with medical waste disposal, and establishing long-term
partnerships with suppliers were recommended to improve the hospital's healthcare performance.
